AFJROTC
Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps
The objectives of the AFJROTC program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life skills; promote community service; instill responsibility, character, and self-discipline through character education, and to provide instruction in air and space fundamentals.
Enrollment is open to all young people who are in the ninth grade or higher, physically fit, and are citizens or nationals of the United States.
Since its formation in August of 2002, the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) program at Union Public Schools has grown into one of the most decorated and most respected units in Green Country. Union JROTC color guards conduct countless flag ceremonies each year and our competitive drill and fitness teams have won trophies in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas.
Union's AFJROTC program was the only organization of any kind to represent the state of Oklahoma in the Presidential Inaugural Parade in 2009 and 2013. Union AFJROTC is also the only JROTC unit of any service that has marched in two Presidential Inaugural Parades. Our program conducts formal military ceremonies and volunteer services for community and veteran's groups throughout the area massing more than 2,500 hours of community service annually.
The program was selected as one of 90 units to receive the 2017-2018 Air Force Junior ROTC Distinguished Unit Award with merit. This award recognizes Air Force Junior ROTC units that have performed above and beyond normal expectations, and that have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force Junior ROTC mission of producing better citizens for America.
Curriculum
Cadets learn Leadership skills such as self-discipline, time management and goal setting. They also learn basic military skills, aerospace science and physical fitness during a four-year academic program. The program is designed to build the character and confidence in each student so they can face the challenges of the modern world.
Instructors
The Union JROTC instructors are highly qualified and decorated retired members of the United States Air Force with years of active service. Union instructors served with distinction and have been recognized repeatedly as AFJROTC Outstanding Instructors since forming the Union program in August 2002. Their leadership has helped this unit to be recognized as among the best in the nation, earning the distinguished unit award six different times.
Cadet Organization
The Corps of Cadets is organized in the same manner as an active-duty Air Force Group. It is comprised of a group commander and group staff with subordinate two squadrons. There is a Squadron at the High School and one at the Freshman Academy. Each class hour is organized as an Air Force Flight assigned to their respective squadron.
