College/Career

Students and parents are encouraged to make an appointment with a College and Career Advisor if they have any questions or just want to discuss post-secondary options. The advisors are happy to take appointments for after school hours if it is more convenient for parents. 

Career Connect offers high school juniors and seniors real-world experience through internships in various job fields within the following programs: Automotive, Construction, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood, Future Educators, Information Technology, Law Enforcement, and Manufacturing. 

Program-specific certifications and training include OSHA 10, OSHA 30, CPR, Food Handlers Permit, Ford and AC Delco, Forklift Operator Certification, college courses, and more. 

Students should begin the college application as early as the end of their junior year. The College/Career Center staff are here to help walk students and families through the process, including information about the Common Application, application essays, and transcripts. 

Union Public Schools and Tulsa Community College are part of a joint venture creating EDGE - Earn a Degree, Graduate Early, a program that is among the first of its kind in the state.

This program provides eligible High School students the opportunity to earn 60 college credits concurrently while attending Union High School; students who complete the program will receive both an associate degree and a high school diploma upon graduation.

Throughout the year, the College/Career Center offers students numerous opportunities to prepare for the ACT and SAT. These standardized tests are required by most colleges and universities, and are used to make admissions decisions.

The College/Career Center has a wealth of financial aid resources for students, including information and assistance with FAFSA, Oklahoma’s Promise, and scholarships. For other resources, students should visit Financial Aid. College can be expensive, but no matter a student’s financial situation, it is possible for them to go to college or trade school!

Union’s job shadowing program offers students the opportunity to spend two hours of each school day learning about a career they are interested in pursuing upon graduation. Students receive first-hand experience in the field and build a network of professional relationships.

Union High School uses a college planning system called SCOIR to help students and families navigate the college selection and application process.

This intuitive, user-friendly platform allows students to discover colleges that match their personal as well as academic interests, explore personal strengths and career interests, and manage their college application materials.

Students who participate in Service Learning may go off-campus for two hours each day to volunteer with a non-profit organization or work at one of Union’s school sites. Either way, placements offer students valuable workplace experience. 

Juniors and seniors at Union High School have the opportunity to attend classes at Tulsa Technology Center in either the morning or the afternoon. A Tulsa Tech admissions representative is available in the College/Career Center Monday-Thursday during the school year to assist students in choosing a program and applying for admission.

Union has consolidated secondary honors and gifted courses into the Advanced Placement (AP) program that follows academic guidelines established by the College Board, a nation-wide organization that focuses on preparing students for college.

The goal of the Union Advanced Placement program is to strengthen curriculum and increase academic challenge for all students. Students are offered pre-AP courses in all core academic areas and are introduced to the essential academic skills necessary to prepare them for success in Advanced Placement and other challenging courses.
